Magic Weekend is back on the Toon in 2025
Ahead of the Rhinos' clash with the Robins, here's your match preview:
Opposition Overview
After a consistent start to the 2025 campaign, St Helens' recent form has swung the opposite way as the Red Vee travel to take on the Rhinos on Saturday after defeats to Wigan and Warrington in the last two weeks.
In his third season as head coach of Saints, Paul Wellens looked to have banished any demons from 2024 as the club made a strong start to their Super League campaign with wins over Salford, Castleford and Wakefield during which they scored 154 points and conceded only 12. A first loss of the year to Hull KR saw them respond in the Challenge Cup against Leeds, but the Red Vee have struggled for consistency since. They've lost out to Warrington three times (twice in the league and once in the Cup) as well as Wigan in a 24-14 loss, but have managed to keep their place in the top six with results against Catalans and Wakefield.
As Paul Wellens tries to steer his side back towards success, the side look to channel their recent history at Magic, which has seen them win three of their last five meetings in Super League's highlight weekend of the year. Apart from last year's loss to Wigan at Elland Road, they have wins over the Warriors, Huddersfield (twice), Castleford, Widnes, Hull FC and Warrington in the last decade at the event, and add a new opponent in Leeds in 2025.
New half back Tristan Sailor leads the club in tries and assists whilst Jack Welsby continues to be the star name in the lineup with the most carries and second most metres in the competition so far in 2025. The Red Vee are also being patient with the likes of Harry Robertson, George Whitby and Dayon Sambou who have progressed through the club's pathway and played plenty of minutes in Super League this season.
